“Why are you naked?” Jessie asked me, looking me up and down after Random, Tessa, and I had slid into the backseat of what I assumed was Rafael’s car and we started driving off at breakneck speed. Other than Jessie and us, Rafael was the only unknown person in the car, which put me on edge. The last time I’d seen the man, he was practically accusing me of having something to do with Lisa’s and Chuck’s deaths. Now, he had my ex-fiancée and the only other person in the world who could understand even half of what I was going through with all of this in the front seat, and I had no idea why. And while Jessie didn’t look afraid or out of sorts, I had been surprised during all of this before. The way I saw it, I couldn’t be too careful about things now.

“I’m not naked. Besides, things got complicated up there,” I said, looking down at myself. Sitting here in my boxers with the sheet I’d used to disarm the cop wrapped around my waist, I was definitely underdressed. That was beside the point, though. As we raced out of the hospital parking lot, my mind ran every bit as fast as the car’s engine. I needed answers, and I needed them right now. “What’s going on here?”

“That’s a question for me, Mr. Lucky,” Rafael said, staring at me through the rearview mirror as we tore onto the main road. “But I’m afraid answers won’t come until I have a few of my own.”

I grimaced, looking at the man and remembering that when I met him, it was at a police station. Now, here I was, caught red-handed trying to break a prisoner out of the hospital. I hadn’t had much luck convincing this guy I wasn’t up to no good then. Now, it would be a distinct impossibility.

“Don’t I have the right to remain silent and all that jazz?” I asked, narrowing my eyes at him and thinking that I’d better start protecting myself, protecting all of us. The last thing we needed, on top of everything else, was to end up locked away by the Mexican government.

“You do,” Rafael answered. “Though I’m sure what you’re quoting are Miranda Rights, and those are a bit different down here. Besides, they only come into play if you’re being arrested.”

My chest tightened upon hearing his words. “Does that mean we’re not being arrested?” I asked.

“Couldn’t say,” Rafael responded as we zipped through traffic on the freeway. The crystal clear water bobbed off in the distance, bright rays reflecting off it. “You’ve been pretty cavalier with the law, obviously.” His eyes cut to Tessa. “But it would take a police officer to arrest any of you, even the one who has already been convicted of a crime. And I don’t see any of those here.”

My shoulders dropped, as though a weight had been pulled from them. Still, I could feel creases form in my forehead. “You’re not a cop,” I said.
